  • Transportation from airport to downtown hotel in Las Vegas?

Thanks to all who responded to the question about going from McCarren to the Main Street Station. Hope to put the info to use in Sept.

RENT A CAR FOR YOUR TRIP & there'll be less time wasted & you can go where your little heart desires.

I booked a 7 day rental..TWENTY BUCKS PER DAY (slightly less even) Most folks can handle paying 20 bucks. Self-park & no tipping for valet.

      Re: Hotel Transportation

We also always rent a car so as to be able to drive around town, eat at out of the way places, etc. However driving in Vegas can be treacherous, taxes on rental vehicles at McCarron Airport are hugh, and I disagree with Sal re: valet parking at least when visiting the larger casinos.

I tip the valet $3 but $2 is reasonable. It is worth $2 to avoid the inconvenience of driving into a parking garage, finding a place to park, hoofing it to the casino, finding your vehicle afterwards, and getting back out of the garage.

In sum rent a car if you feel confident you can get around in Vegas and always valet park especially at the large Strip casinos.

WELL GOOD THEN, BRIAN---BUT YOU WILL 'NOT& BE GOING ALL OVER TOWN...not to mention Red Rock, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon even. Y'all can stay cooped up on the strip & take public buses or the Monorail. RENTAL for me--every time !!!

              Re: Hotel Transportation

I will chime in again. Brian and Sal are both right.

If you are new to Vegas and/or just want to stay on the Strip for a few days it does not make sense to rent a car. You should just taxi or shuttle to and from your hotel. Some offer a free shuttle. However, it you want to go to the places Sal mentions you will need a rental car.

When we go we always visit Red Rock Casino as well as the Fremont Street Experience, we always try to breakfast a couple of times at the Egg and I on Flamingo and we usually stay where we are offered comped rooms.

Since we are quarter video poker players we do not get comps on the Strip. We are comped at such places as Sam's Town, South Point, The Cannery, The Orleans, etc.

Obviously to get around to these places in any expeditious manner we need a rental car. Also, a rental allows you to come and go as you please. So if you want to really see Vegas as Sal suggests a rental car is a must.

I recommend you join the Thrifty car rental club. Thrifty is usually the most inexpensive and if you are a club member and make your reservation in advance you vehicle is waiting for you at the rental car center and you can bypass the rental desk. We once tried to save a few buck with Budget but the 30 minute wait in line soured that deal.

One last point I made in a previous message, driving in Vegas is somewhat treacherous as people drive much faster then most of us are used to. In Indiana I am an aggressive fast driver. In Vegas I take it slow and easy.

                Re: Hotel Transportation

To rent or not to rent...it all depends on what you want to do with your time in Vegas. As for driving, we have driven a 24 foot motor home around Vegas and did okay. We did lots of walking and took buses up to Fremont Street.

When we do fly out, we will definetly rent a car for a few days to use for day trips, since we also enjoy the nearby scenery. Hoover Dam is a must see. If time permits, we would drive out to Zion Nat'l Park in Utah. Mesquite, Mt. Charleston and Red Rock Canyon are also nice trips.

We can always take gambling trips in the Midwest if all we want to do is gamble. If I am going to make the effort to fly out west, I want to enjoy the scenery and mountains. Yes, we do enjoy the attractions on the Strip and spend time enjoying them also. Retirement is great.
