I have discussed this place with a number of friends who were not anywhere near as excited as I was by this place. I admit I am not objective. My first stay I managed a corner room high up and I was just blown away by the amount of glass and the views. I did not want to leave the room. I did not have wifi, but I had my computer and there was a huge table to accomodate my writing and as I wrote, I could glance up and look at the changing views. It was especially amazing at sunset. Being out on Boulder Highway, these views were not views of other huge buildings. I could see places I knew in the distance, but also there was the flat desert stretched out before me and some mountains as well. Here is what I wrote then "I am on the fourteenth floor and two of my walls are glass floor to ceiling like some fancy NY city penthouse. The view is spectacular with mountains in one direction and the strip, downtown and more mountains in the other. These are long views and very different from other hotels views closer into town.I am watching the lights come on and the sun set over a mountain. It reminds me of the view from the Stratosphere where I often went to see that change from day to dusk to dark and the difference in the colors and patterns and sense of things when the lights come up." I also like the bathtub. In fact, I took my first bath in years there. It was big and accommodated me comfortably. "this extra wide bathtub with the circular shower curtain that is out of the way and these contoured to the body elbow rests looked inviting. It is the most comfortable bathtub I could imagine."I liked having a refrigerator in the room and with Walmarts not far across the street, this was very helpful. I love the geometric theme of the building itself with its rectangles of neon color at night. I liked that this theme is carried over throughout the hotel. "The decorative theme is squares and rectangles. If I look around at lamps and bed backings and even the wall art, I can see that shape is everything here. The curtains are large rectangles of gray and purple. The hallway carpeting is a wonderful jumble of all sizes and colors of rectangles. Carpeting here in the room is stripes which still create long rectangles. They make the room look incredibly long. It is a huge roomEvery so often there will be some curve like the arms of the chair or the lamp on the desk."Plenty of towels. The room also had a thirties looking reading chair which was very comfortable. The counters are all granite. The one outside the bathroom is about seven feet long. There is just one sink, but two distinct sections including two towel bars. The little bar like counter that sticks out is a very nice touch both in looks and function."The second time I went I had received one free night as a promo. I did not get a corner and so the experience was less dramatic. There is still one wall of floor to ceiling glass, but it was not the same. I was going to Sam's Town the next day, so I took the one night. Normally, this might be a check-in and check-out hassle, but I wanted to play live poker late into the night/early morning and was not quite sure of the walk back to Sam's Town, so this one night let me check that out ( I found it rather safe from my viewpoint) and same a few dollars as well.Directly across the street is a Bank of America. With the dwindling of the issuance of Traveler's Checks, I have wanted to establish a method of getting at my bank account without a fee. This was very simple and worked great. Many feel they cannot go to the Boulder Strip without a car. This is just short sighted. The Flamingo bus 202 drops right at the parking lot of the Cannery East. It is safer and easier than going to Sam's Town by bus and we can go at any hour. The bus does not just stop there. That is the layover where the driver gets a break. So there is no waiting at a bus stop. We can watch for the bus from the Eastside Cannery circle and walk over when it arrives with plenty of time to board and bus driver probably not too far away. The 2-4 poker is one of the better games in Vegas. Brian, the brush, is really one of the best poker room managers I have ever met. I watched him explain rules to one obnoxious woman and he was just so diplomatic and yet firm on what was what. There are some tournaments at times and they seemed interesting, although I did not play. The rake, whenever the table was short handed, was immediately dropped on request with no casino whining. Dealers were friendly and fun. Players were a mix, but late at night there were some fish for sure I think the Cracked Aces bonus went until about 9 PM. I hit it once right after I had lost $100 by showing up late. On an earlier day I had earned on square in a sports pool. There were 100 squares and four times when any of us could win. Of course, I hit the first time and was not there to collect.VP is only good in the classic section where you get quarters and drop them in just like the old days. There I played 9/6JOB. It is interesting to play these old antiques and remember days gone by. I did not win, but the time went slowly with the coin dropping and there is a place to get casino credit on the Player's Card. The buffet is subpar. However, I ate there twice because it was free with 4 hours of poker play and did not subtract from any hourly comps. Like every subpar buffet there are always something that is unusual. Here is was the cookies. They were really wonderful. It was hard not to just make a meal of cookies. The Mexican place gets good reports for their food. Most think it is better than the Mexican at Sam's Town. I'll try it next time. I expect they have to have good food because they attract a Latino community. All the staff was just friendly and good natured. When I checked in, the clerk looked a long, long while to see if in any way I might get a corner room. There just were none available. I was not fluffed off because I was only staying one night. When looking at prices, seniors should note that in most cases they can get a senior rate by calling that is $10 off the posted rate. So weekdays this means rooms are often $30. On the website is a place to join up for information and maybe for deals. I have not received any deals there, but then I don't play much beyond live poker. In the lounge last visit I spent an entire night listening to some of the best Latin music I have heard in a while. I ordered the microbrew Cannery beer. Even in the Marilyn lounge, it was a just a dollar a bottle. That was amazing! I had had too much free alcohol that night, so I just nursed one through two sets.
