Harriet Diamond, a friend of ours who is an Atlantic City resident, went to one of the fireworks shows and sent us the following report:

    Tropicana Lights Up AC Boardwalk
    By Harriet Diamond

The crowd begins building up early evening to claim their spots to watch the Tropicana’s eye-catching flashing billboards. Adults and children -- who were either passing by or came for the show –- sit and stand as screens depicting natural scenes, movie images, and major performers bring the Boardwalk to life.

The light and sound show comes on every night starting at dusk with shows at 8:30pm, 9pm, 9:30pm, 10pm, 10:30pm and 11pm. During each show, the crowd becomes participatory: applauding, cheering, and dancing. The featured shows include a rotation of “American Woman,” “Party in the USA,” and “We’re an American Band.” The Tropicana has brought a vibrancy and energy to this previously sleepy end of the boardwalk, attracting visitors of all ages not only to the Tropicana and all it offers in food, shopping, entertainment, and gambling, but to the small businesses and eateries on the blocks before and after as audiences arrive, linger, and leave.

Robert and Lucy Alonzo and their children were visiting from Maryland. “This is not our first trip to Atlantic City,” said Alonzo. “We always come to the Trop. There’s always something to do at the Trop.” Residents of neighboring towns are also tapping into the excitement. Amy and Michael Epifanio came from Egg Harbor with their daughter, Mia, and her fiend, David Rossi. As they waited for the light show, Amy shared her thoughts: “Atlantic City gets better all the time. “ She added with a big smile, “DOAC.”

The Tropicana Fireworks have become a Saturday evening tradition. Visitors return with friends, crowds line up all along the boardwalk, condo residents watch from their balconies, and outdoor restaurant and beach bar patrons have front row seats. Seeing this display once is not enough. Each Saturday brings a new facet. The fireworks, from the beach, bring a hometown feel to a masterfully choreographed show. “We are thrilled about the response to our fireworks display so far,” said Steve Callender, General Manager of Tropicana Atlantic City.

The fireworks continue through September 12 giving yet another reason for Miss America Pageant visitors to be on the Boardwalk; the light show will remain a welcome, ongoing attraction. Residents and visitors appreciate the Tropicana’s lighting up their evenings.
