  • Palace Casino Resort gambles on strict no-smoking policy

As a non-smoker I like this idea and I hope it spreads to other casinos. However, since a lot of casino customers like to smoke, I don't think it will be popular with other casinos.

When it reopens on June 14 after a $50 million renovation, the Palace Casino Resort in Biloxi, Miss., will no longer allow smoking in its casino, hotel, restaurants and sports bar. Smokers will be able to light up inside a lounge just outside the main casino. "Being a leader comes with a little risk, but we're willing to take it," said Palace Casino Resort General Manager Keith Crosby. Biloxi casino tests limits on smoking

We have stayed in the Palace a number of times and liked the hotel, but thought the casino was small and awkward since Katrina. I certainly welcome this announcement and we will go out of our way to stay and play there in the future--I hope it makes up some for those who will avoid the place because of this policy.

We, too, have been there, stayed there, and enjoyed. We'll enjoy much more and will tend to be there and stay there more often with this new policy.

In their mail announcement the Palace is claiming that the new smoking lounge is costing $1 million.

Wow - that is going to be some lounge.

It is a shame the only playable VP is $5 9/6 JOB. I long for the pre Katrina days when 25 cent full pay JOB was offered.

Never thought we'd see the day! It’s one of the reasons we gamble very early in the morning and not very often in the evening hours. But we have noticed a decline through the years.

Since Mississippi is one of only 11 states that have not enacted any general statewide ban on smoking, we agree. . .this is a pretty risky move. Obviously, the employees will live longer and so will the gamblers which is a no-brainer for the casino - Keith Crosby is betting that smoking takes a back seat to gambling!!! To each his own addiction!!! Let gambling rule!!!

Any bets on who the first casino in Vegas will be???

It was tried a lotta years ago at what was the "Silver Slipper" (?????). It was across the street from Westward Ho and Stardust in that shopping plaza. Small place and the smoking ban didn't last or go over too well as I remember it. Probably was about 1970 or thereabouts.

Well, I kind of remember the Sliver City (I think) across from the Stardust. It was non-smoking and had penny slots--real pennies inserted. That would have been 1991 or so. It went out of business, but not sure if it had anything to do with it's non-smoking policy. It probably did hurry it's death along, but it had other problems as well. Non-smoking referendums seem to be passing more often--for example, near us in all of St. Louis Co, smoking ban in most all public spaces passed by nearly 2-1. So I'm guessing there will be a time when casinos are non-smoking, just not sure when that time will come, or if Palace can survive with the policy on it's own. But I wish it good luck.

Good info, RenoPlayer! We think we remember the Silver Slipper, next to the Frontier at the time (we remember the sign with the gigantic slipper on it - - -and we are obviously dating ourselves!!! Yikes!) . . .of course, your comment that they tried non-smoking in the 70’s explains why it didn’t make it at that time. We weren’t as “aware” as a society like we are today.

Just as another interesting fact - looks like the original “Slipper” was just installed on North Las Vegas Blvd which you can see at The Silver Slipper's New Fit - News - ReviewJournal.com
