  • A bit of low limit poker banter

There is a huge amount of no limit poker talk on the internet, but low limit is rarely discussed.

The ACG has two coupons that work great for low limit poker:
$60 in chips for $50 at the Golden Nugget
$50 in chips for $40 at Tuscany
At a low limit game those buy ins are probably enough to get started. At NL games the buy in probably should be more, so the coupon delivers a higher percentage of free chips at buy-in in a low limit game.

The Tuscany coupon is sometimes hard to redeem. I suggest that you call ahead and see if there is a game going. Sometimes it is quiet there.
The Golden Nugget is always hopping. There you might wait for a seat. Pay attention to whether games have a kill or not. If you begin playing a game with no kill and you don't want a kill, your one veto will determine the rule. Also, if you play for 4 hours, they will issue you a voucher for $10 off the buffet. It is also a line pass so you avoid the huge lines that buffet sometimes attracts. This will only cover the entire cost of the buffet if you go on certain mornings for breakfast, but playing in the evening, you can ask them to postdate the coupon and get free breakfast most day.

Table selection is everything in low limit poker. You need enough action to overcome the rake but not so much that you are pushed off hands by too many players chasing straights or flushes.
I know plenty of people who stay away from the games at Harrah's HET(now called Caesar's CET) casinos because they rake an extra dollar. I think that the people who can do the mathematics well enough to see that lower rake as costly are the sorts of players I would rather not have at my table. Those that ignore the mathematics are the players I want for opponents. So the higher rake is an automatic help in table selection.
Then too at all CET games we can now earn points on our player's card and get room offers. This is a great comp for tourists and less than a great comp for locals. So at CET games we can logically expect not to sit down with seven people who know the dealers and each other by name, and play with some sample of the same fifty people everyday.

    Lowest of the low limit:

The El Cortez has a spread limit game with one single dollar blind. Bets of one-three dollars can be made until the river card is visible. Then bets of 1-6 can be made.

O'Shea's has a similar game, 2-6 on every round. The tables sit almost on the strip so that you can be entertained by the passing people.

2-4 is everywhere, but Imperial Palace in the morning and sometimes into the afternoon offers a bonus for cracked Aces and Kings. That is great insurance if you want to just sit and play tight and wait for those cards. You can hardly lose money playing those hands.
