Vegas vs. Reno, is it possible for people to lured to Reno instead of Vegas?

I'm a new business development executive at one of the Reno's larger casino. But I am not here to advertise, at least not yet I understand Reno is not even in the same league vs. Vegas, but I'm still curious to see if there are anything Reno can do to bring more of those regular gamblers here instead of Vegas. I would love to see some of your thoughts, and maybe your experiences in Reno?

I do not speak for everyone, but my wife and I like Vegas versus our local casinos for many reasons. The major ones are: "free" cocktails, variety of casinos, MANY more varieties of games to choose from (esp. VP), lower limits on table games (we LOVE dollar craps and the house still makes money off us ), and just a sense that we can maybe win sometimes. I realize that when in Vegas we do wager a lot more than back home, but over the last 2 or 3 years playing VP at home vs. 4 or 5 trips to Vegas, Vegas wins in a land slide. I estimate we have hit either 4OAKS or RFs in Vegas a good dozen times or more (mostly 4OAKS) and maybe 3 or 4 (all 4OAKS) back home. Luck? Chance? Sure. But it seems to hit us more in Vegas...

I really do appreciate your inputs. I'm also a bit superstitious about playing bigger casinos vs. smaller ones *lol* I assume you have never visited Reno before? Personally I think Casino in Reno have a brand image problem, and their strategies is a bit out of date. As for free drinks and comps., Reno actually offers a lot higher return in that categories. But to me, the biggest differences are you can enjoy a bit more of outdoor activities in Reno vs. Vegas. We are only 30 mins away from beautiful Tahoe, and there are many hiking trails, museums, and ski resorts in the surrounding areas. Depend on your gambling habits, but I like to have that option during the day, where I can diverse my days, then focusing making some money during the evening

May I ask, is the distance is the biggest factor you don't consider Reno as a destination for your gambling fun? If so, what would the Casinos here need to do for you to give Reno a try? Thanks.

You know, I think my wife and I would love Reno. But the biggest hang up now (and has been for a while) is the cost of airfare. From KC to Vegas it is usually around $200 or so per person round trip. But to Reno? About $400. If there was anyway to team up with airlines to bring down the airfares we would be there on our next vacation. But we cannot justify $400 extra on airfare.

Yes, I understand what you mean, the airfare are usually the biggest obstacle to travel anywhere, and Reno are limited with their direct flights and costs. So may I ask, how many days do you usually stay in Vegas? And what kind of roommates are you getting there? Because overall, Reno's costs is noticeably lower than Vegas, which could help offset your overall spending. And the service you get might even be better, because Reno is a bit more down to earth, and would appreciate your business a bit more

We would love to go to Reneo for the first time, but, as mentioned, the airfare is just prohibitive everytime i have checked it. Have tried the Harrah's junkets but have not been able to connect with them either. Oh well, someday!!

I'm in the travel industry myself and I think the biggest problem for Reno is advertising. Vegas has such a hold and always will on the Nevada market.

When you think of cities to gamble at in Nevada, I'd say the "big 3" are Vegas, Reno, and Laughlin. Of course, there are casinos in many cities throughout the state, but I'd say those are the three with "strips" of casinos.

While Vegas dominates, Laughlin kind of feeds off that. It's not far from Vegas, and can be a nice change from the busyness of the Vegas atmosphere.

While Reno will never be Vegas, I think marketing is a big issue. Reno needs to develop some sort of a marketing campaign that "hits the jackpot", something that entices people to come to Reno. I rarely see any brochures/advertising for Reno. Maybe their tourism folks mainly cater to the West (I'm in Michigan), but a more broad range of advertising might be helpful if it's done the right way. I'm no marketing expert, but Reno needs a "catchy" ad campaign. Don't try to compete with Vegas in the ads, just be your own individual.

I would love to visit Reno someday. We're taking a huge 5 year anniversary out west trip soon that will incorporate Southern Cal, Southern Nevada, and Western Arizona. Reno was on our pre-planning itenerary, but was scratched due to it being so far north and "out of our way" to make it worthwhile. Maybe one time we will fly into Vegas, enjoy Vegas, then drive to Reno and check it out. Reno, obviously can't help its location, so I feel that marketing/cost is the big issue holding Reno back.

Just my thoughts, take them for what they're worth

I have been to Reno about a half-dozen times.

I like the place, but it certainly isn't Vegas.

It has an old-time feel to it and most of the casinos are downtown, which makes it seem more like a duplicate of downtown Vegas, rather than the Vegas Strip.

Whenever I go to Reno I always make a trip to Lake Tahoe. It's a beautiful place and anyone visiting should definitely plan on going to Lake Tahoe.

dmoore268, thank you for your inputs, and you hit right on the spot!! I couldn't agree with you more. The casinos in Reno are all trying to compete with each other for the same customers, and spends millions on renovating their own buildings, but what they don't realize is if they spent a fraction of those budgets into true marketing, they would probably generate a lot more new business, instead fighting each other to the death!

Steve Bourie: Yes, Lake Tahoe is probably the most beautiful natural Lake in the world! I've travel quite many places around the world in the past 10 years or so, decided to come back to Reno because its natural beauty. Again, this is a big marketing problem for Reno business, everyone expect Reno is just for old timers that wants to gamble, which is totally not true. I believe Reno can actually offer much more active activities than Vegas does, at the same time, you can still get great services and entertainment on the Casino floors Before you come next time, please give me an email at [email protected], and I will hook you up.

I don't know how the coupon deals works between Steve/his publisher and the casinos, but it would be nice to see more coupons for Reno casinos in future editions of the book. The 2011 edition lacks coupons for the Reno area. Reno casinos should give some thought to investing a little in that. This may entice people that buy the book to visit the Reno/Tahoe area.
