Allegiant Fleet Grounded: Most of Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air's fleet has been grounded due to a maintenance snafu, a move that will likely have consequences through the weekend. Only nine of the airlines scheduled 24 departures from McCarran International Airport took off on time today, with a company spokesman confirming that, "Sunday and Monday will be operationally challenged." The maintenance issue came to light during a routine investigation by FAA agents earlier in the week, following the emergency evacuation of an Allegiant flight due to smoke in the cockpit; investigators discovered that the inflatable emergency slides that deploy from the sides of MD-80 jets were being overhauled only once every three years instead of annually, as required, prompting Allegiant to remove from service all planes with non-compliant slides.
