  • Downtown Las Vegas hotels

We are planning to be in Vegas in October and would like to spend a few nights downtown. I would like to hear from someone who has stayed at Fitzgeralds or Binions. Any recommendations are appreciated.

We have stayed at the Fitz repeatedly, but not for about a year. We like it and would have no problem staying there again or recommending it, but you must understand that the rooms are basic--clean, good size, but basic.

Clearly GN and MSS are superior, if you just are judging the rooms. We stayed in Binions once about 2 years ago, in the old Mint tower. Wife refuses to go back. Room was worn, carpet stained, furniture was thread bare. Fitz is clearly a better choice than Binions, in our opinion.

You might think about the 4Qs--rooms have apparetnly been newly re-decorated. We have stayed there often and clearly prefer the South Tower, but we haven't been there since they re-decorated so it may not be the case any more. Have a good time.

If you are in reasonable shape, I would recommend you stay in the tower rooms of the El Cortez.

These rooms are huge(see website) and the 2 for 1 coupon makes it a great deal.

Only drawback is that it is a few blocks away from the other hotels.

Most hotels in downtown are old. The El Cortez has just remodeled. Binions has gone down so far in the last years I would not even consider it.

The Golden Nugget is nice, I have not been in the Fitz in many years. I was in the El Cortez a few weeks ago and the place has changed so much for the better, its really nice.

The only drawback is it's a few blocks away from the rest of the hotels. Which ever one you choose I hope you enjoy your stay, and WIN.

            Re: Downtown hotels

I agree with the previous posts. Binions rooms are small and definitely not great. Would stay there again, at the right price though. That means free or 2/1.

The rooms at Fitz or 4Q are fine, but I think the Tower rooms at El Cortez may be the best downtown with the exception of the GN, and lower priced too. That little walk getting there does have to be considered.

A couple more would be the Plaza and the Vegas Club. I've stayed at the Plaza more than any place in Vegas and I like it there. The rooms are far from fancy, and a bit worn at times, but they are large. And the price is perhaps the best downtown if you don't have a comp or a coupon.

              Re: Downtown hotels

The two for one coupon for the El Cortez is only good for the Vintage or Pavillion rooms. It is not good for the Tower.

                Re: Downtown hotels

I have stayed at the Las Vegas Club a few times this summer at a cost of 39.00 during the week. They even had a 'stay an extra day' promotion for only another 22.00. The rooms are decent enough and the location of the establishment is good.
The Main Street Station rooms are excellent but they priced themselves out of my business this summer......around 80.00 per night. I love the atmosphere over there though....nice casino...and the 777 Pub is one of the best bars and hangouts in town in my opinion.

How are the Vintage and Pavillion rooms at the El Cortez? It sounds like the Tower rooms are pretty nice.

The Food at the four queens is great in the cellar.

                        Re: Downtown hotels

Just wanted to expand on my post from last week about downtown recommendations. I have used the ACG coupon for the tower rooms and checked the latest edition to make sure that it was not excluded from the 2 for 1 room deal. Maybe the other post got unucky with a desk clerk who did not read the coupon.?

As far as food deals, Main Street Station has a fantastic buffet and should not be missed.

                          Re: Downtown hotels

Since the MSS buffet was mentioned, it should be noted that the ACG has a coupon for a Fremont St Experience coupon sheet which includes 2/1 buffets at MSS, the Fremont Casino and Fitzgeralds.

This is well worth getting. Go to the FSE office above Walgreens on the 2nd floor. You should be able to get one even without the ACG coupon. Just ask for one. I think they will give it to you if you are from out of state. Walgreens is located just east of the Fitz.

To expand a little further on the Fremont Experience Coupon Sheet.

Most of the coupons on the sheet are usable 'once a year' so that multiple sheets isn't of use. But, Fitzgeralds buffet is not in that category and while not inordinately fancy will easily provide a nice 2/1 breakfast.

If you go to the security office above Walgreens, each member in the party can pick up one without the coupon. The coupon is good at a kiosk just outside Binions (and you sort of have to search for the 'Coupon Book' sign.

We usually stay at Four Queens and had an email from my brother who just stayed there. He said they'd put flat screen tv's in the rooms.

Unfortunately, the Fitzgerald's buffet has been closed for several weeks for remodeling, and is not scheduled to re-open until mid-September.
