I went to Vegas Thursday night… long flight in from Orlando so naturally when arriving at 11 pm downtown I was awake until 4 am local time. I stayed at the Golden Nugget Rush Tower on a comp offer which was absolutely great, beautiful rooms which are probably on par with the nicest standard rooms at the high end strip properties, just not quite as large. Played a lot of video poker on the first night, noticed the 8/5 JOB progressive at the Vegas Club was higher than I’d ever seen it at 1900 and played that for a while. Hit a straight flush and a couple quick 4 of a kinds on some 50 cent JOB at the Main Street Station bar to win $250. Also had to enjoy what almost seems like my guilty pleasure and play multi strike and super times pay multi strike at El Cortez (I say guilty pleasure since you can lose so much so fast in this game which seems irresponsible, but the huge win potential is fantastic). I didn’t win at El Cortez so I got a couple appetizers to eat at Magnolias at the Four Queens and went to sleep.
On Friday I decided to explore the strip which isn’t a frequent thing for me since I like downtown so much. Decided to valet the rental car at the Tropicana and try out their $200 loss refund guarantee. This offer is legit and I recommend everyone try it, if you lose up to $200 they give you it back in free play, half the same day and the other half in a month. So I put $200 in a 8/5 bonus $2 machine and figured I’d play it until I doubled it or until I lost it. I got down to 5 credits, then started winning. I got 2 quick full houses to get me about even, then a flush and a couple more wins to get me to 150 credits, then almost quit when I got a 4 of a kind to put me over $500. I cashed that out and went to hooters to try their $200 free promo. This promo is a joke, you have to hit a jackpot combo on a promo slot machine to win anything. However, I then played a little bit of quarter deuces wild there and hit 4 deuces for $250. Then I went and walked the strip, went through MGM and into Planet Hollywood at which point I was hungry and conveniently saw this little place called Earl of Sandwich. All I can say is wow… that was probably the best sandwich I’ve ever had. Then I went into the Cosmopolitan and was quite pleasantly surprised at how nice it was and how friendly the staff members were. I sat at the Book and Stage bar to play video poker and was surprised in 2 ways – first that the video poker was not horrible, 9/5 JOB at denominations from quarter to $5, and that I was comped any expensive cocktail that I wanted to order on the menu, some of which were $15. I also played $25 blackjack there and won a couple hundred, the dealer was very good at his job and friendly. I walked down the strip farther and through Paris into Bally’s where I played some blackjack and craps but lost. I took the monorail back to the MGM and got the car back from the trop and headed back downtown.
I had a great dinner at the brewpub at Main Street Station. This is where it gets good… I really like playing blackjack at the Golden Gate because the dealers are attractive women who do not wear much clothing and because the blackjack still pays 3/2 and you can double after split (they will hit soft 17 though). Very fun atmosphere. I started with 500 and had 900 betting $25/hand 10 minutes later. This led to an epic run where I was over $2000 (still hadn’t bet more than $40 per hand) before I started losing. I was there so long (probably 7 hours) that a host came up to me and told me that she’d take care of anything I needed. I left with around $1400, mad that I hadn’t quit earlier, but knowing that the luck turns and happy to take that win.
The next day I struggled to brush off the hangover from the night before and was down a little downtown. I even had to take a midday nap in order to feel better for another long night since it was my last night in Vegas. I then went to check out the aforementioned JOB progressive at the Vegas Club which still had not hit and now was at $2300 or so which is an advantage play so I played it for a while before dinner at the Binions ranch steakhouse. That’s always a great experience, my “16 ounce” prime rib had to be well over 20 ounces and was delicious. Then I went back to golden gate and couldn’t find my luck from the night before, quickly losing $700. So at this point I remembered the progressive at the Vegas club and went back to see that it still had not hit and was approaching $2500. I put $100 in and with about $50 left held a queen of clubs and to my amazement the other 4 to the royal came out. I won $2494.75 and savored my first single line royal in a casino. I tipped the change lady and was overjoyed to be solidly up for the trip.
On the last morning I broke even playing a little video poker, got my cashback from several casinos, and headed home hoping that the next trip will be as enjoyable as this one was!
