  • Fitzgeralds Las Vegas: Potential is There for This Sleeping Giant

I happen to be paralyzed and in a wheelchair, but fly out several times a year I fly out to Vegas and always enjoy checking out the various resorts -- especially the Downtown properties. We always spend some time in Fitzgerald's as we like the second floor restaurant and I like the Sportsbook now that Lucky's has taken over the operation and brought one of my favorite employees over from the Plaza. But none of us ever get much of a feeling of being wanted or welcome in Fitzgerald's like we do at the Fremont Street casinos. And we have never received any type of of offer, news, promotion or e-mail from the property even though they have our contact information from our Player's Club cards.Up until my recent visit, I would have given a 5 Rating for the Food & Drink as we loved the 2nd floor restaurant -- especially the deals on barbecued ribs, burgers and the pasta bar.But not only have they raised their prices a bit -- completely understandable as the ribs were arguably the best dining deal around after the Golden Gate shrimp cocktail (which seems to have disappered with their renovations) -- more importantly the quality and portions appear to have been reduced substanstially. I love almost any kind of barbecued ribs. But the ribs on my recent visit looked and tasted quite a bit different than the ones from previous visits and were a disappointment. The pasta bar is still great though (remember to tip the guy preparing the made to order pastas) and everyone who works in the restaurant is friendly and has a good personality which helps to makes up for the lack of customer service in other areas of the hotel -- especially the casino and cashier's cage.Another reason why I probably would not stay there with so many other nearby options is the extremely slow elevators. But I am looking forward to see what renovations are in store for this large downtown property.
